Colleges of Distinction

Colleges of Distinction

Today’s high school senior is faced with a college search that is pressure-filled and highly commercial in nature. A world of publications exists just to offer rankings for colleges, identifying so-called “top” schools.

Colleges of Distinction is a college guide with a unique approach. Instead of looking for the richest or the most famous schools, selected schools exhibit the four distinctions that make a college truly great: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities, and successful outcomes. These schools are not ranked, because every student has a different “number one college” based on their own individual needs and interests.

Colleges of Distinction is a complete guide for students entering college, and contains a wealth of information and hands-on materials to help students find their perfect college fit, including quizzes, checklists, college listings by region, and two-page comprehensive college profiles.

About Colleges of Distinction

Colleges of Distinction is the result of a group of concerned parents, educators and admissions professionals’ goal to improve the current state of the college admissions process by providing consumers with the best possible information about higher education.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Wonderful and useful guidebook!
Alma College is very pleased to be recognized for those institutional qualities that matter most, such as quality of teaching, the kinds of experiences available to students, and how well students do after they graduate. This is the kind of information families and prospective students should most seek in considering which college is right for them.

5 Stars Great Book!
We are very pleased that Eastern Connecticut State University has been chosen to be included in `Colleges of Distinction.’ As Connecticut’s public liberal arts university, Eastern seeks to attract outstanding students and faculty who are dedicated to intellectual discovery and engaged learning. Being recognized by `Colleges of Distinction’ is not only a great honor, but also an indicator that we are on the right path to becoming a university of first choice. - Elsa N

The Search for Quality Integrated Education Policy and Research on Minority Students in School and College Contributions to the Study of Education

The Search for Quality Integrated Education Policy and Research on Minority Students in School and College Contributions to the Study of Education

“In a comprehensive, balanced, and detailed analysis of hundreds of studies, organized into topical chapters, [Weinberg] covers such issues as race and intelligence, desegregation and academic achievement, education in black schools, the education of Mexican and Native Americans, and minority experiences in higher education. The research cited represents a wide range of studies. The author’s own conclusions are balanced, as in his summary of discriminatory practices within schools: The course of desegregation depends greatly on the educational leadership that is brought to bear.’ This is an excellent, readable, and even indispensable book…. More than a review of the literature, it defines the scope and diversity of minority education studies to date. Appropriate for upper-division undergraduates and graduate students.”-Choice

Places to post video for higher education types

William “Bud” Deihl recently tweeted me a question I thought I’d answer via a blog post. His question was: What locations / resources do you recommend for faculty to place their digital stories for use in higher ed? Before I provide some links, I’ll suggest the first question faculty can/should address is how “public” and browsable do they want the video(s) to be? To limit the viral potential of videos as well as the distribution/dissimenation of videos, faculty (and others) can post vi

How do I pursue a career in health and nutrition?…?

I am 24 years old and have not been to college or had any higher education. I am passionate about food and health. I live in a town of about 30 000. Am I too old to go to University (I live in Australia, so it isn’t called college here). Is it too late? Where do I begin? They have a place called TAFE over here, kinda like Community College in the U.S, but the courses they offer have nothing to do with what I am interested in. Can someone please give some advice??? Thanks! G’day, Defini
